Saldaña Authored Bill to Ban Open Carry in California

Posted 2 years ago

In 2010, Assemblymember Lori Saldaña introduced AB 1934- a bill intended to ban the practice of "open carry" of unloaded handguns in California. She was subjected to such extreme criticism from advocates of open carry that special security details had to be assigned to accompany her to public events.

Ultimately, the bill was held in the final hours of the 2010 legislative session. But one of her colleagues re-introduced the bill the following year, shortly after the tragic shootings of a US Representative in Tucson Arizona.

In his final floor presentation, the Assemblymember praised Saldaña's leadership for bringing the bill forward in the previous legislative session. The bill was approved, and Governor Jerry Brown signed it into law; open carry is now illegal in California.
