Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña Co-authored California's Marriage Equality Law

Posted 2 years ago

It's been 11 years since Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña lead the way for members of California's LGBT community to have equal marriage rights. Saldaña was the only Assemblymember from San Diego who voted in support of then-Assemblymember Mark Leno's landmark legislation. (He currently serves in the Senate, representing the San Francisco area.)

Saldaña also co-authored the bill, agreeing to do so on her first official day in office, after being elected in 2004 in an unexpected victory against well-funded moderate opponents.

During her 6 years in the State Assembly Saldaña represented over 475,000 San Diegans. Her district included the Hillcrest community in San Diego, home to one of the largest LGBT neighborhoods in the United States.
